Reading

At Bishop Wood Junior School, we believe that reading is fundamental to learning and opens the door to the wider curriculum and the world beyond the classroom. Our aim is for all pupils to become confident, fluent and thoughtful readers who enjoy reading for both knowledge and pleasure. Through carefully planned whole-class reading lessons, pupils develop key comprehension skills including vocabulary, inference and understanding of a wide range of texts. Children are encouraged to discuss ideas, explain their thinking and justify their responses using evidence from what they have read.

Alongside the teaching of reading skills, we place great importance on developing a lifelong love of reading. Pupils are exposed to a rich range of high-quality texts through class novels, poetry, non-fiction and teacher read-alouds. Opportunities such as library visits, reading events, author visits and World Book Day help to promote a culture where books are valued and reading is celebrated. By the time pupils leave Bishop Wood, we aim for them to be fluent readers who read widely, think deeply about what they read and recognise reading as both an important life skill and a source of enjoyment.
